When someone says that they are blowing smoke up your ass, that means they are complimenting you in an insincere, over the top manner, but once upon a time, blowing smoke up someone’s ass was used to literally mean blowing smoke up someone’s ass.
Due to COVID, this unusual medical idea of ventilation through one’s anus has made a resurgence.. yes, that’s right — it is possible to breathe through your butt when your lungs stop working.
The idea is that there is a lot of contact to the blood stream in the large intestine and it could be inflated with pure oxygen to keep a patient alive while their lungs get a rest and heal.
What is funny is that delivering stimulating medicines to a patient via air blown up their butt is not a new one. It just went out of fashion.
For example, you could also smoke cigarettes through your butt and get a big dose of anti-inflammatory nicotine that saves your life.
My big question is: how did they figure this out?
I also have some questions about why a fully grown Artemesia Annua tree looks just like a Christmas tree.
This all makes me think of a sci fi scenario in which *once upon a time* regular people had cheap access to a lot of life saving medical techniques that we don’t have today because they can’t be made profitable. It is easy to imagine how a moment of crisis could be used to erase non-profitable techniques from popular memory. This could even happen accidentally.
(Can you tell that my COVID worries are resurfacing due to the CDC announcement that the new variant spreads via vaccinated people and that in a super spreader event involving 400 people, 3/4 of the infected had been fully vaccinated yet carried the same viral load as unvaccinated people. Is the return from summer freedom going to surprise everyone in a bad way?)
